SearchGPT should be making Google nervous

Is there a new search engine sheriff in town?

SourceCon Community

I am sooo impressed by what OpenAI has done with its alleged Google-killer, SearchGPT. More on that later in the newsletter.

In this issue:

  • A new Sourcers Anonymous awardee!

  • SearchGPT should be making Google nervous

  • Fresh content and a new episode of “The Source!”

  • Launching a new comic- “Purple.” Shall I keep it going?

Enjoy…

Sourcers Anonymous!

A big thank you to all of those who have submitted articles in time for the Sourcers Anonymous special deal of two articles earning you a ticket to SourceCon. As of August 1, 2024, the standard has reverted back to normal. To those who submitted prior to the deadline, your content is being evaluated. For now, a quick note of kudos to Rachel Lopez who earned a ticket to SourceCon with her articles.

Do you feel inspired to write articles and earn a ticket to SourceCon? I hope so. But if not, check out the Sourcers Anonymous section on our blog. You may get a few ideas there. Good luck!

Facebook

Quick question, how often are you in the SourceCon Facebook group? I’m noticing increased activity around a few of the current posts. For one, a poll on candidate interview status was interesting. Everybody seems to agree that one week is enough time to give an update on a candidate’s application status, so why are there so many frustrated jobseekers? I asked that in the comments of this post. Please add your insights.

I was also pleased to see in the FB group a demo on SearchGPT by SourceCon Grandmaster - Jim Schnyder. There is a lot of speculation that SearchGPT is going to topple Google’s search dominance. Based on what I saw, the potential is there. Its not fully open to the public yet so the jury is still out. A bit more detail for you.

SearchGPT is a new prototype search engine developed by OpenAI, launched on July 26, 2024. It aims to redefine the online search experience by integrating traditional search engine features with advanced generative AI capabilities. Unlike conventional search engines, which typically return a list of links, SearchGPT provides direct answers to queries, along with relevant source citations.

Key Features of SearchGPT

  • Ad-Free Experience: SearchGPT offers a completely ad-free interface, enhancing user experience by focusing on content rather than advertisements.

  • User-Friendly Interface: The search engine features a larger search box and a three-column layout for search results, which improves navigation and accessibility. Users can choose between light and dark themes.

  • In-Depth Answers with Citations: SearchGPT delivers detailed answers similar to extended Featured Snippets, ensuring transparency by including links to source articles. This allows users to verify the information provided easily.

  • Follow-Up Questions: The search engine can handle follow-up queries, allowing for a more conversational and dynamic search experience.

  • Local Search Results: By default, SearchGPT uses the user's IP address to provide localized search results, enhancing the relevance of queries related to location.

  • Partnership with Publishers: OpenAI has partnered with various publishers to ensure that content is accurately represented and attributed in search results, addressing concerns about content creators losing web traffic

Sourcing Diversity by Researching Luminaries

If you source diversity candidates, without a doubt you are familiar with the Grace Hopper Celebration. If not, the Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) is an annual event that celebrates women in computing and technology. Named after the pioneering computer scientist Grace Hopper, the event is organized by AnitaB.org in collaboration with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The Grace Hopper Celebration is more than just a conference; it is a movement that seeks to change the face of technology by recognizing and amplifying the voices of women in the industry. When I read this, or rather reflect on it as I’ve known about this event for ages, I am wondering what other diverse groups I could target by focusing on other luminaries who happen to be people of color. Let’s try an experiment.

3 Things Taylor Swift and Sourcing Have in Common

Taylor Swift has a way with words. Sentiment, creativity, and imagery flow through her songs effortlessly as she relates to millions listening to her tunes. She weaves past scenarios to paint a picture, a lot like what we do as sourcers. In true swiftie fashion, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to highlight three similarities between T. Swift and Sourcing, from strategizing ahead and visualizing possibilities, to knowing when it’s time to make a change.

The Source!

But I digress. Are you open to work? If so, check out the latest episode of “The Source!” and while you’re at it, subscribe to our YouTube channel.

In this episode of The Source, Jenna Aronow discusses her unique job search tactics with the hopes that it inspires job seekers seeking their next opportunity. If you, or someone you know, is open to work, this is the episode that cannot be missed. Click here to see the episodes you missed.

Embracing the Fear: The Vital Role of Professional Writing in Community Engagement

You’ve seen the posts encouraging new writers for SourceCon and you’ve read some of the articles. Maybe you attended SourceCon and heard about the opportunity to write for SourceCon’s Sourcer’s Anonymous program and you really want to do it, but something is holding you back. Perhaps you’ve never written professionally before, or you feel like you don’t have anything to offer the community. Those reasons held me back for a couple of years from putting myself out there…

Purple

I’m experimenting with the idea of a regular comic series called - Purple. It will focus primarily on work memes, especially those related to recruiting and sourcing. If you have any jokes that would make an interesting meme, please do let me know. What do you think? Shall I keep it going?

May the source be with you!
