Sooo...

Do you watch livestreams? I do, as you likely do, they are a popular format after all. I was watching one recently (about Marvel movies) and reflecting on when they were not so common. In fact, I remember the very first livestream I saw. It was produced by HootSuite. They were using an app called Periscope to give tours of their various offices and to attract passive talent. It was a low key job fair in an "Ask Me Anything" format with the CEO (I think it was the CEO) hosting. It was pretty cutting-edge at the time. Not too long after, Facebook debuted its livestream capabilities with Zuck chatting with a tech exec about the culture and work opportunities at Facebook. I don't recall the exact dates and all but trust me, it happened, and as it did, I knew I was witnessing the beginning of a major recruiting trend. Pretty soon, every company will be livestreaming content and pulling in candidates like bees to honey. But... I'm not seeing it.

Yes, some companies have used livestreaming to recruit passive candidates. However, it is not at the level where it is commonplace. At least, I don't see it, and I am perplexed by that. I mean, it's a super-cheap and easy way to attract talent. If you agree with me, and I hope you do, please consider it a viable strategy for your recruiting org. Furthermore, ponder these possibilities when plotting your strategies.

  • Low-Key Hiring Event - Be a copycat and do what HootSuite did back in the day, give an office tour as an executive responds to questions from the crowd about opportunities, work culture and company history. It does not have to be long, just interesting. I think Hootsuite spent 20 minutes, at each office location, with their livestream. (If anyone knows for sure how long they were, please remind me.)

  • Job Talk - Invite passive candidates to a virtual intake meeting with hiring managers. Let candidates hear from managers what they want, what they really, really want. (Apologies to the Spice Girls.) Maybe add some career advice on what it takes to succeed at your company and wrap it up with testimonials from happy employees. (You can find some willing volunteers for that, right?)

  • Shop talk - Invite a leader to discuss why they love a product your company is developing, patents they have won, or the direction of the company. Give an up close intimate look on what makes your workplace THE place to be employed at. Or, maybe discuss why your org uses open source technology versus proprietary software that only authorized developers can modify or distribute. Just spitballing here.

Oh, one more suggestion, and this is the most important part of the brainstorming I'm doing here. Make these livestreams exclusive to candidates in your applicant tracking system. Why?

  1. When you nurture applicants, it proves you appreciate their interest in your company.

  2. When applicants feel appreciated, it boosts your employer brand.

  3. It is easier to recruit people who have already shown interest in your company, especially when they feel appreciated. Thus, your time to fill decreases.

But hey, those are just a few of my thoughts. Share yours on social media and tag @SourceCon. Perhaps I will share your comment in the next newsletter or chat with you about them at the next SourceCon which is 2 WEEKS AWAY! Can you believe it? Yeah, me neither.

See you at SourceCon!

Will AI Take Over Recruiting? Here’s Why Humans Are Still Key

Jim Stroud here, your SourceCon Editor, and today I am reflecting on 20+ years operating in the recruitment industry. I have seen some things change. Pretty much, change has been the only constant in recruiting in terms of the technology used to make it happen. That being said, I have not seen the pace of change as profound as the advent of artificial intelligence. Holy Smokes! (Pardon the language.) It has many people wondering if they will lose their job in the short-term and their careers in the long-term. I understand the trepidation but I gotta side with optimism. No, recruiting, nor sourcing, will fade away from the job catalog (so to speak) but it will change as we know it. Let me give you three reasons why I think that.
