The Future of Sourcing is Autonomous Agents, Talent Attraction and Psychology

If you can master these skills you will be unstoppable now and in the future.

SourceCon Community,

Not too long ago, Adam Kovacs was a guest on “The Source!” demonstrating the very cool tool - Perplexity. In case you missed it, click here. Anyways, in a recent LinkedIn post, he asked “What will Sourcing 3.0 look like?” There were several opinions shared. This was mine. (I added links for easy reference.)

Maybe it will be autonomous AI agents that will be primed to individual tastes and specialized search processes so that every search is unique to the individual. Even when two people are looking for the same person, they will get different results, outreach in their own way and results tweaked based on personalized results of repeat usage. Maybe tools will get better but only so much as the individual uses and tweaks it. But that will only be part of the equation.

I can see sourcing morph into predictive analytics and content developed for candidate attraction. So, if you are looking for a python engineer with a passion for LLMs, content is generated that would appeal to a specific person. Maybe it will be an ebook or an article behind a firewall. Want to read it? Give me your email address and I will send it, along with a drip campaign that appeals specifically to that individual and not developers in general. Want to see Guido van Rossum debate Joseph Weizenbaum on why your resume makes you the best candidate for job X? Email me and I will send you a SORA powered video doing just that.

Maybe Sourcing 3.0 is all about talent attraction at the ultra-personalized level? AI can certainly help with that. Thoughts?

If my supposition is correct, then to stay relevant and indeed, a high-value candidate in the talent, the following skills are necessary.

  1. Data Analytics and Predictive Modeling: Understanding data patterns and predictive analytics will be crucial. Recruiters should be comfortable interpreting data and using it to make informed decisions about where to source candidates and how to engage them.

  2. Technology Proficiency: As recruitment tools evolve, staying updated with the latest technologies, including AI and machine learning, will be essential. Recruiters should understand how these technologies work and how to apply them effectively in their processes.

  3. Content Creation and Marketing: The ability to create or oversee the creation of engaging content that appeals to specific candidates will be important. Skills in digital marketing, particularly in content marketing and strategy, will help recruiters attract the right talent.

  4. Personalization Techniques: Skills in personalizing interactions and content based on candidate data will set recruiters apart. Understanding behavioral cues and preferences to tailor communications and job offers will be a key skill.

  5. Ethical Use of AI and Data: With a heavy reliance on AI and data, understanding the ethical implications and maintaining transparency in how data is used and how AI-driven decisions are made will be crucial to maintain trust.

  6. Soft Skills: Despite the technological advancements, human interaction remains vital. Skills in empathy, communication, and relationship-building will continue to be important, especially as recruitment becomes more candidate-centric.

Education Recommendations:

I wouldn’t go so far as to say you need a degree in psychology to be the ultimate recruiter or sourcer but, it would certainly help. Pete Radloff who gave a stellar presentation on the psychology of sourcing at our last SourceCon event would certainly agree with me on that. If a degree in psyche seems too much, here are some other considerations.

  • Courses in Industrial-Organizational Psychology: To gain insights into best practices in human resources and the psychological principles that guide organizational behavior.

  • Workshops on Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology: To learn specific techniques for better candidate assessments and interviews.

  • Certifications in Social and Consumer Psychology: To enhance strategies around employer branding and candidate engagement.

I sometimes overthink things, so I could be way off base. What do you think? Let me know via the poll below and/or reply back with what you think the future holds for sourcing.

Hey Recruiters! Resumes are people too…

Yikes, yikes, and double yikes! The Department of Defense (DOD) says military services missed recruiting goals by 41,000 during the 2023 fiscal year. This shortfall impacted the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

The Army has fallen 10,000 short of its 65,000 recruit goal for 2023. The active duty Army is on track to reach only 68.15% of its accessions goal for fiscal 2023, while the Army Reserve is on pace for 61.59% of its recruiting mission. Okay, once again, yikes!
